sterling in order to keep things going has largely regained the confidence of the Chinese population of the Colony. Clementi, the new Governor, who arrives there at the end of this month has an almost unrivalled knowledge of Chinese character and is persona grata with them. I hope therefore that he will be able to do something to restore confidence and friendliness and our general prestige.
I note what you say about Sir Robert Ho Tung.
I was only joking when I asked you if he had been talk- ing to you, as I know he is very "riendly to us.
You must use your influence with the Chinese girls in order to convince them that we are not so bad as the pamphlets, which you sent me, depict us!
I hope to see you before long as I think we have at last got a house in town.
